Mother’s Day is rapidly approaching and many face the same predicament they face every year… what to get mom. According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is expected to total $31.7 billion this year, up to $3.6 billion from 2021’s record spending. Read this quick post before you hit the stores to shop – you’ll thank us later.
We received two consistent responses from moms across the United States: the gifts to avoid and the gift topping everyone’s list.
Mother’s Day Gifts to Avoid
Most moms agreed they did not want to receive the “usual” Mother’s Day gifts. This would include:
- Flowers
- Chocolate
- Stuffed Animals
- Spa Kits
- Anything found in the dedicated Mother’s Day section of any store
This does not include cards. Whether it is store-bought or handmade, moms love cards. Just make sure to include a written heartfelt note.
Avoid any gift that requires mom to do anything. So, if you decide to make mom breakfast in bed, please clean up your mess so she doesn’t have to. Moms cannot relax if there is a mess waiting for them.
The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift
Moms all really want one thing for Mother’s Day and that is a day to themselves – completely. This means:
- We do not want to make any decisions.
- We do not want to take care of anybody.
- We do not want to cook or clean.
- We do not want to answer to any yells for “mom” and the ensuing chaos.
- We do not want to search and find any missing items.
For some moms, that is spending the day with friends or walking around Target, alone, with a coffee in hand. For some it’s going to the gym, getting their nails done, getting a massage, or having their family take them out for breakfast. Whatever it is, make that happen for them!
Mom’s guilt is a real emotion. It makes us feel selfish for wanting time away from our kids and family on Mother’s Day, which is unfair. Moms are superheroes that keep everything and everyone moving forward. One day per year to unplug and recharge is not a lot, and we think it should be more frequent, but we can start with Mother’s Day.
Happy Mother’s Day!
