Background: These Red Velvet Cake Cinnamon Rolls are a fun recipe for Valentine’s Day! The cream cheese icing is delicious! It’s absolutely perfect, not too sweet, just right. Surprise your loved ones with these for breakfast or brunch! We added sprinkles to make them more festive, but you can make this recipe all year round.

  • 1 package red velvet cake mix
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2-3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • sprinkles, optional
  1. To make the dough, combine red velvet cake mix, yeast and 1 cup flour in a large bowl. Add warm water and beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes, until well combined. Add an additional 1 cup of flour and knead with a mixer or by hand. You’ll want a soft dough consistency so you may or may not need the additional flour.
  2. Spray a large bowl with non-stick cooking spray and place dough inside. Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap and let it rise for one hour in a warm place. Punch down and let rise again for another 30-60 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, salt and cinnamon together.
  4. After the dough has risen for the second time, roll it out on a floured surface in a large rectangle, about 1/4″ thick.
  5. Spread the melted butter over the dough and sprinkle the brown sugar mixture evenly.
  6. Start on the edge and roll the dough into a log. Using a sharp knife, cut into 12 equal pieces. I start by cutting right down the middle, then make little marks with the knife to “measure” even pieces before cutting.
  7. Place cinnamon rolls in a 9×13-inch baking dish lined with parchment paper. Cover with kitchen towel and let rise for 1 hour.
  8. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned.
  9. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese and butter with a hand mixer. Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  10. Spread over warm rolls, add sprinkles and enjoy!
