I drafted a couple takes on why Joe Biden would not be my president because of his total disregard for the Constitution. There are several articles on this issue already, specifically, “The not my president crowd needs to sit down and shut up.”
While I was ready to post my take, I woke up in the middle of the night with a startling thought. I cannot support any so-called Democrats of today’s persuasion. Why? Before I answer, let me give you some background.
Libertarian upbringing
I grew up in a “Libertarian” family before there was a formal party. I was taught about the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
I went to private schools my whole formal educational life. A Lutheran Church grade school and two years of junior high, a private Colorado Springs prep school for four years and an Iowa college for three and a half years. Some might think I led a sheltered life. But did I?
Daily wanderings into diverse backgrounds
In the early 1960s after school, I would walk across the street to my dad’s office. I would spend several hours each afternoon doing homework and wandering around the office.
During my wanderings, I experienced a diverse background of race, gender, and culture I am just now beginning to put into perspective. I really did not realize how much I learned from the folks I encountered in my daily walks around my dad’s business until a few years ago.
I learned about people, ideas, and individualism. I also received a dose of morals, values and ethics thrown in for good measure. Think about this from a historical perspective.
Workforce of the 1960s
It was the 1960s. The newspaper had a female head bookkeeper (CFO today) during a time when only 4.3 percent of women were employed as managers. We employed Black people, Hispanics, and deaf people all in the same building. Who knew we were ahead of our time? I grew up thinking this was normal.
Starting in 1966, I went to work in the summers for the newspaper. I worked with a racially diverse team. One, a wonderful black man, would become my mentor and protector as I grew older.
Did this upbringing have a large effect on me or not? How did it affect the purpose and content of the paper?
What kind of folks are working in Washington D.C.?
I believe Washington D.C. is full of deceitful, arrogant people. We have witnessed this over the past four years and then some. I believe a lot of this was generated by the fear of having an “outsider” as the president. An outsider who did not play by the rules and vowed to drain the swamp.
Shocking you say! No, not really. Any time you have the curtain pulled aside to reveal the shenanigans going on in our government, you have people concerned about any revelations. Fortunately, we have seen the happenings behind the curtain.
Democrat President
Why can I not support a Democrat president? Again, it really is easy! I have beliefs that are 180 degrees different than they do. Not only that but they are trying to disassemble the basic tenants of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, the cornerstone of this imperfect but phenomenal country.
Working across the aisle
There is no longer a meeting in the middle and working across the aisle. Both parties believe it is their way or the highway. We have watched for the last four years, and probably longer, the tearing apart of our political fabric. The constant infighting and breakdown of communication between the two ruling parties has left a lasting impression on all of us.
Even the response to a global pandemic has spiraled down along political lines. Cities divided into red and blue states and graded by politicians instead of their safe and effective response to COVID-19. Enough is enough!
Total control of my life
I cannot speak for anyone else but myself. But I believe the Democrats want total control of my life and interests. A Democrat believes in totalitarianism or socialism, which I will never support. As a Libertarian, I believe in the sanctity of the individual and their personal rights and actions.
If you voted for a Democrat, I hope you do not get what you deserve. A President Biden will mean higher taxes, free college, Medicare for all, New Green Deal that does not change the climate for the good, and more government regulations. It will mean a fundamental shift away from the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
If you do not believe my observations from this election cycle, let us watch Biden/Harris’ actions over the next few years.
