Background: My family makes double batches of the Texas Trash Chex Mix snack during the holidays and gifts it to friends and family – if there is any left! Great snack and easy to modify with your favorite snacks, ex. Gold Fish, Buggles, etc.
- 1 – 12 ounce box Corn Chex Cereal
- 1 – 12 ounce box Rice Chex Cereal
- 1 – 16 ounce box Wheat Chex Cereal
- 2 – 16 ounce bags Thin Pretzel Sticks
- 1 pound pecan halves
- 1 pound Planter’s Mixed Nuts
- 1 ½ pounds butter
- 2 tablespoons garlic salt
- 2 tablespoons Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
- 2 tablespoons Howard’s Bottled Onion Juice
- 1 ½ teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 1 ½ teaspoons Tabasco Sauce
- Preheat oven at 250 degrees.
- Mix the cereals, pretzel sticks, pecan halves and mixed nuts and put in an extra-large roasting pan.
- Bake in the oven for 45 minutes at 250 degrees.
- Combine remaining ingredients in saucepan and bring to a simmer and then maintain at a low heat.
- After you have baked the cereal mixture for the first 45 minutes, drizzle one third of the sauce over the cereal mixture and stir carefully – you do not want to break up your pieces. The sauce will settle so stir often, between pouring over the cereal mixture.
- Bake for 45 minutes and repeat this step two more times or until all the sauce is mixed into the cereal mixture.
- Total cooking time is about 3 hours. Leave in the oven to cool uncovered.
Note: We pour the trash back into the cereal boxes and seal.
To add a little variety in your snacking and gifting, pair with the Spiced Candied Pecans.
