Cancel Culture

I was fortunate to hear a presentation by Michael Poliakoff, American Council of Trustees and Alumni, last Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at the Cheyenne Mountain Conference Resort in Colorado Springs. In my opinion this was an excellent overview on ‘Cancel Culture’. Merriam-Webster defines cancel culture as “the practice or tendency of engaging in mass canceling as a way of expressing disapproval and exerting social pressure”. The masses would like to shame people away from having a second opinion on the issues they discuss every day. Yes, I meant what I just wrote.

Cancel culture is a mechanism to stop any debate, civil or not about anything. Think about what this is doing to free speech. Think about how this affects the First Amendment of our Constitution. Those who believe in this culture do in fact want to stifle other opinions that challenge their own.

What a sorry and ridiculous situation. Riddle me this. Is there still a Flat Earth Society?  Do we still use Diethylstilbestrol (DES)? Is Roundup safe for people? The answer is yes to the Flat Earth Society, no to the use of DES, and we do not know for sure about Roundup.

So, think about this, as issues have a longer shelf life, we tend to find out MORE information about them. By allowing more than one opinion, both discussions and information can expand. This to me is part of lifelong learning. Isn’t this what humans should strive for?
