At the MOB we pride ourselves for having personal hands-on knowledge the things we write about. Turntables are flying off the shelves for the last few years. The younger folk have taken a shine to this method of reproducing music. I will not go into all the esoteric issues of which is better/more accurate reproduction CD’s or LP’s, I will save that for a later time.

Turntables range from $100.00 to more than $100,000.00. Yes really! I obviously will not be talking about the upper end as I have only seen a few but never used or even heard one play a record.

I have owned about half a dozen or so turntables. While there is a certain nostalgia about playing black shiny discs, they come with a labor intensive and fussy background.

They scratch, need cleaning, proper storage and care to use. The sound is good enough to endure all this sometimes, but not all the time in my humble opinion.

I personally like both LP’s and CD’s. CD sound has gotten much better recently with the advent of better and less expensive DAC’s. Another article for a future time.

If you interested, go listen to an LP at a stereo store. If you like what you hear, buy an inexpensive turntable and a dozen LP’s. You never know what this choice might lead to in the future. You might even start an LP collection. The website, What HIFI? has reviewed the best turntables for 2021 including the Rega turntables and others. I have a Rega Planner 1 and 10. I also enjoy the SME Audio Model 12.
