Mayor Suthers Mayor Suthers Still Smiling

It is obvious that the Colorado Springs Gazette does not understand the concept of the Fourth Estate or the professional conduct of journalism. The editorial board needs a reality check. An article, dated Feb 23, supporting Wayne Williams for mayor, highlighted the great contributions of Mayor Suthers. Let’s take a closer look at Mayor Suthers’ reign or was he just the Sheriff of Nottingham?

No one with a political bent does “just” good things. This city has NOT had great progress under Mayor Suthers’ leadership.

What about the redo of the Banning Lewis Annexation Agreement (2017) when Mayor Suthers, the City Attorney, the Chief of Staff, and the folks at Norwood redid the agreement under the words “proprietary ideas”, a favorite phrase by Wynetta Massey, the City Attorney. It usually ends with the citizens of Colorado Springs losing everything but the kitchen sink.

Are you enjoying our pothole-free roads or all the road dieting that occurred with this Mayor?

What about the new water ordinance that Norwood overtly exerted an influence upon this Mayor with the threat of a city charter change? Who drafted the ordinance? Does it benefit the citizens of Colorado Springs?

What about the ongoing cost to the taxpayers for the Olympic Museum? The estimated number of annual visitors in the City’s application to the State was challenged by Economic & Planning Systems, Inc., the consultant hired by the State to conduct an independent analysis. The analysis concluded that while “potentially achievable”, the 350,000 visitors annually were “aggressive”.

A great Mayor – hardly! The Gazette’s editorial staff aggrandizes him way too much and leaves out the question as to what specific constituents he listened to while in office. In my opinion, it certainly was not all the citizens of Colorado Springs. Nor does the Gazette speak for all those people anymore either.

I fear times have changed for the worst. The Gazette’s Editorial Board is full of folks who like to paint rosy pictures of people they might need something from. The newspaper won’t necessarily need anything but alas, the Broadmoor might.
