Basketball in China

Too often these days my mind is consumed by random thoughts. Right now, it is full of them on three different subjects: China, COVID, and getting ahold of my elected officials.

China, NBA, and Nike

So, China first it is! I have very strong beliefs about the Chinese government. These beliefs stem from my newspaper background. Any government that closes independent news sources, like the Hong Kong Apple Daily newspaper, only distains individual rights and freedoms.  The CCP Chinese government is after all a totalitarian evil dragon. It is their way or die.

So now that the stage is set what information caused me to write this. I believe that the NBA should become the CCPBA and that the Nike CEO, John Donahoe, should reside in China. Send all the folks working in the CCPBA and Mr. Donahoe and his management team to live there for at least a year. I believe it would be a truly interesting and enlightening experience.

You see these two groups embody the worst of capitalism…money and market share above all else. A really bad decision in my opinion.

COVID and the mask obsession

Second, COVID and the mask thing. The CDC and our politicians are coming back for the second inning of the game of totalitarianism. Fine folks – but be accurate. Tell people about which masks work, and which ones do not.

If you cannot report the actual science, then resign. PERIOD! What does Susan Wheelan, Director of the El Paso County Health Department have to say? I am more than curious. I have a clue for her. Read any 3M or Honeywell Earloop Fluid Resistant Face Mask box and ask yourself what it says.

Contacting my elected officials

Have you tried emailing your elected officials lately? Some do not have government emails, instead relying on Gmail accounts (remember Hilary). Others do not have public emails, instead they use Contact Us forms and hope for the best.

The Maverick Observer staff and I are studying ways to be a bigger burr under the saddle of these politicians and unelected bureaucrats. For too long these folks tend to listen only to the people who donate money for their campaigns.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you supposed to represent all the citizens in your political boundaries so start listening. We are going to be more active going forward.

My thoughts are summed up in this Henry David Thoreau quote, “Those who have been bred in the school of politics fail now and always to face the facts.”
