First, let me say flying this weekend to Grapevine, Texas was not a bad experience. The flight crew was professional, courteous, and attentive to our needs. BUT our needs consisted of putting our belongings away and sitting in our seats until we got to Grapevine.
I sat in first class (figured if I saved all my money for the last two years I could splurge) and got a Diet Coke. No service for the rest of the plane – bring your own munchies and drinks. Of course, the only way you could take off your mask was during “active” eating or drinking. I made my bag of trail mix last a long time!
But what really struck me was how quiet the plane was. How little eye contact we made with each other and how sheep-like we were.
There was a subdued atmosphere, no anticipation of starting a vacation or getting back home after vacation. Instead, everyone sat quietly and did their best to get through an uncomfortable experience.
I have a friend that calls planes “tubes of death”, but after this weekend’s flight, I call them my “cone of silence”. If you want some peace in your hectic life, take a flight and enjoy no email, no movies, no entertainment, and no talking.
