I do not know about you but following the uptick in the craziness and division caused by the storming of the Capital building and subsequent actions have left me with a sense of defeat and helplessness. I found myself feeling inept, sad, scared, and embarrassed by the actions of some of my fellow Americans and the Government. Where are we headed in the coming days and years?

As I was driving into work this morning listening to the radio, a song came on that struck a chord with me. “Undivided” by Tim McGraw and Tyler Hubbard was this song. It begins with a scenario we have all experienced.

“You see Billy got picked on in school
For things, he couldn’t change
He tried his best to play it cool
But in the seventh grade, you either fit right in or you don’t fit
That’s just the cold hard truth
I wish that I’d have been the friend that Billy never knew.”

Ok, the song now had my attention. Like a great greeting card that says exactly what you could not put into words this song, for me, did just that.

“I think it’s time to come together, you and I can make a change
Maybe we can make a difference, make the world a better place
Look around and love somebody, we’ve been hateful long enough
Let the good Lord reunite us ’til this country that we love’s undivided.”

The word, “undivided” had me remembering words I had pledged to my country every school day. Wasn’t a similar word part of that pledge in The Pledge of Allegiance? Yes, “indivisible.”  Even though I was uttering these words by rote standing alongside my classmates daily, did I hear them and truly pledge them with my heart? I think not. Maybe as adults, we need to go back to those required words and make that pledge. One we can stand behind, believe in, and actively pursue.

So, I arrived at work thinking I would share my thoughts, however jumbled they may be, in hopes of encouraging someone that we do have a say in reuniting our country. It just has to start with one person and that one person is you.
